What do you think makes you a good coach?
I think bringing fun to my lessons is what makes me a good coach. Enjoyment of the game is critical for kids as it builds interest that in turn leads to self-sustained learning which I think is a fantastic life-skill for kids to develop.
What are your key strengths?
Making kids laugh and have fun. It’s game after all lets not forget.
Why do you love Chess?
I love chess for the many life-lessons it teaches. It helps build focus, strategy, tenacity and patience. It’s also a chance to spend time with family and friends too doing an activity that doesn’t involve a screen. :)
When/how did you first learn to play?
I think my first lesson of the game might have been way back in 1991? And I’ve been playing the game on and off since.
Why do you enjoy working with kids?
I love working with kids as they’re always interested in learning and having fun.
What are your main Chess achievements?
I captained my high school chess team to a tournament win in West Auckland many moons ago.
How do you think Chess helps kids?
Chess has so many beneficial facets to it for children. By playing the game, they learn to develop their thinking and tactical skills in a fun way.
Amongst other things they also learn about patience, perseverance too that’ll help them too in life.
That’s how it helped me and I hope that with coaching I can help the next generation learn those life skills too.
