The 6th MC Cup Qualifiers event for 2012 entertained 79 keen Chess enthusiasts ranging in age from 4 (one of our students!) through to 15 years. The event continues to remain popular as we head into Spring.

There were 12 girls in the event which was great to see.

Pawns and Kings Divisions

We changed the names of the divisions so that we can add more divisions to the tournament as its popularity continues to increase. We had intended to run a 3rd rooks division but decided to leave this for the 7th MC Cup in September. You can read all about the new divisions on the Format section of the MC Cup FAQ.

Chess Power Arbiters

Paul Macdonald was the Arbiter for the Pawns Division and Roshan Gallage was the Arbiter for the Kings division.

Brandon Walker, an avid Chess Player from Parakai School worked the kitchen once more supplying drinks and biscuits to famished kids.

Puzzle Competition

We did have a few puzzles out but didn't have prizes this time. The main reason for this was we had limited staff running the event and our focus was on ensuring the tournament was run to schedule as best we could.

Biggest Upset

The biggest upset in the Pawns Division has been awarded to Akram Al-Chalabi for beating Liam Parker in the 2nd Round. Akram has been awarded 20 Chess Power dollars for the win.

The biggest upset in the Kings Division goes to James Yang for winning against Alan Green in the 4th round. James has been awarded 50 Chess Power dollars for this great victory.

Spot Prizes for Merit Award Winners

The winners of the spot prizes for Pawns division players are: 1st 50CPDs Saasha Ghadiali, 2nd 20CPDs Ranae Ghadiali, 3rd 20CPDs Justin Mo.

The winners of the spot prizes for Open division players are: 1st 50CPDs Cindy Wang, 2nd 20CPDs Jack Julian, 3rd 20CPDs Max Gu.

Winners will be emailed details for claiming their prizes.

Age Group Winners

Photos of the Age Group Winners and names are below.

We do note that we awarded Anthony Choong the Under 10 Age Group prize for the Pawns Division when Nathaniel Yan had the same score but a slightly higher tie-break score. So we feel both players deserve recognition as Age Group Winners.
