The 1st MC Cup tournament for 2014 attracted 62 avid competitors. The event was full of fun, excitement and the lolli scramble was the best ever!

Chess Power Arbiters

Paul Macdonald was the Chief Arbiter for the Pawns and Knights divisions.

Bruce Pollard was the Chief Arbiter for the Rooks and Kings divisions.

Jade Macdonald ran the Chess Power Store. And Liam Macdonald did great work in the kitchen making sure everyone got refreshments - it wasn't easy getting a biscuit sometimes! ;-)

Special Prizes


Fastest Draw in the West™
The Fastest Cowboy in the West™ was Rishit Patel who managed 26 seconds. Rishit picks up $10 Chess Power dollars. Samuel Zheng recorded a faster time of 18 seconds but he wasn't present and his witnesses couldn't be verified.
Knights Tour Challenge™ Joel Potter won the Knights Tour Challenge and $10 Chess Power dollars.
Hungry Knight™ The Hungry Knight™ score was 131. Aleck Shen got the closest guess with 121 and picks up $20 Chess Power dollars. Aleck, if you read this please email paul@chesspower.co.nz so we can load up your voucher]
Broken Board™ puzzle The new Broken Board puzzle seemed to challenge the most serious puzzle solvers to the point no-one managed to solve it!

Biggest Upset

The biggest upsets seemed to mostly occur during the 5th round. Perhaps the stronger players on paper were getting a little tired! The biggest upsets were as follows:

Pawns division Mathew Steadman winning against Ben Field in Round 5. Mathew picks up a $5 Chess Power Gift Voucher.
Knights division Preston Dai winning against Sam Potter in Round 1. Preston wins a $5 Chess Power Gift Voucher.
Rooks division Selena Hu for her great win against Sam Roberton in Round 5. Selena wins a $10 Chess Power Gift Voucher. [Selena, if you read this please email paul@chesspower.co.nz so we can load up your voucher]
Kings division

Raghav Ramachandran for overcoming Bella Qian in Round 5. Raghav wins a $20 Chess Power Gift Voucher for this win.
