What do you think makes you a good coach?

Everyone learns differently, and I strive to motivate kids by recognising their unique strengths, skill levels, and learning styles. Tailoring my coaching to each student’s needs is essential to great chess coaching. It’s also about identifying who needs extra support and who is ready to work independently—and adjusting the approach accordingly.

What are your key strengths?

Clear communication, honesty, and a strong desire to make my passion accessible and engaging for younger and/or less-experienced players.

Why do you love chess?

Because it’s the ultimate equaliser. Egos, status, and background are set aside in favour of a fair contest where you must outthink your opponent over several moves, not just one. Chess is great for the brain and builds skills that carry over into life.

When/how did you first learn to play?

My father taught me when I was around 14, and we’ve played many times since—though I’ve recently started to surpass him!

Why do you enjoy working with kids?

Kids are more creative and imaginative than adults. Their unique ways of thinking are a joy to watch—especially when their competitive spirit kicks in.

What are your main chess achievements?

  • Competed in a local tournament at 17.

  • Prominent member of my college Chess Group.

  • Over time I’ve come to enjoy the casual side of the game even more, while my passion has never faded.

How do you think chess helps kids?

So many ways, including:

  • Problem solving and critical thinking

  • Good sportsmanship

  • Showing that hard work leads to results

There’s no luck element in chess—your mistakes and victories are yours to learn from and celebrate.
