What do you think makes you a good coach?

I believe I’m a good coach because I’ve been through the program myself. I know what works (and what doesn’t) and can teach kids in a clear, simple way that encourages both engagement and critical thinking.

What are your key strengths?

  • Excellent interpersonal communication — I connect well with students, parents, and staff.

  • Adaptability — I meet kids at their current level and guide them to their next steps in chess.

Why do you love Chess?

I love chess because it translates directly to life. Things can go wrong and mistakes happen, but losing a piece doesn’t mean you’ve lost the game. In every position, you look for the best move, assuming your opponent will do the same. Likewise, in real life, setbacks happen, but you put your best foot forward in each situation.

When/how did you first learn to play?

My mum first taught me the rules. At age 10, I was inspired after seeing my teacher and a friend play. I taught myself strategies through YouTube videos and later competed in ChessPower tournaments and for my school.

Main chess achievements

  • Team Champion — ChessPower Nationals

  • 3rd Place (Individual) — ChessPower Nationals

  • 7th Place — NZCF Nationals

How do you think Chess helps kids?

Chess develops objective critical thinking, decision-making under time pressure, and resilience. Kids learn to do their best in whatever position they’re in, a mindset that carries over to real-world challenges.
