On behalf of the team at Chess Power I want to wish you a very warm welcome to the Champions Trophy! This will be the largest Champions Trophy by far and we are very excited to bring it to you.

We are expecting close to 220 avid competitors from across the country. I wanted to give you some pointers about the day to help ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible for you.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Catering choices must be done by close of day Tuesday 23 October 2018 - see the catering section below for details.

The event is being held in the Hall at De la Salle College, 81 Gray Avenue, Mangere, Auckland.

We recommend all players bring a drink bottle. If you want to record your games (optional) you should also bring a pen and a score book. Score books will also be available for purchase at the venue.

To open the Champions Trophy we thought it would be a great idea to have a special performance from one or more of the players. It could be anything that is unique and entertaining and should only be 5-10 minutes in duration.

So if you have a special talent and you would like to perform, please email with a summary of what you can do along with a link to a video of an excerpt of your performance.

Results of games will be recorded live and are available on the website

As the Champions Trophy is an individual event, school uniforms are optional. We recommend you wear something comfortable.
Each player can make up a meal bag before morning tea containing morning tea, lunch & afternoon tea.
We recommend you indicate your catering preferences now so you aren't disappointed. If you are participating in the Teams National event on Sunday you can indicate your catering requirements for this event also.
Food is not provided for adults and will not be provided at the venue. However, you can pre-purchase catering at a discounted rate. We highly recommend you do this as there are limited options for food in proximity of the venue.
Note We are also arranging a coffee truck to be at the venue from 8:30 - 10:30am for coffee purchase.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Catering preferences and Paid Catering options must be completed by close of day Tuesday 23 October 2018. I apologise for the short time-frame but our caterers need sufficient lead time to deliver to our catering requirements.

There will be five trophies that the winners get to take home and keep:

  • Overall Champion
  • Overall Female Champion
  • Junior Division Champion
  • Intermediate Division Champion
  • Senior Division Champion

Junior Master Titles
The top 4 players will receive the Junior Master title, a framed certificate and enter the Chess Power Hall of Fame. The players' online profile will be prefixed with JM.

Each player will receive a certificate based on their final score as follows:

Distinction - 6.5 points or more

Excellence - 5.5 or 6 points

Credit - 4.5 or 5 points

Merit - 4 points or below

In addition, prizes will be awarded for the biggest upsets and the biggest rating gainers. Note that the Champions Trophy has a 30 k-factor which effectively means you earn double rating points!

Additional Activities
We will be running complementary coaching clinics through the day so make sure you take advantage of these.

The Chess Power badge system will also be running throughout the event so you can earn and collect badges.

We will be running the Chess Passport system all day so bring your passports or you can purchase them at the venue.

In addition, puzzles and indoor and outdoor activities will be available and some puzzles can earn badges and rewards.

We are very excited to be creating a piece of living art at Nationals. You will have a chance to preview the artwork at the Champions Trophy. At the Teams Nationals on Sunday players will have the opportunity to add their own creative contribution to a 1.75 metre canvas. The artwork will be auctioned at the Teams Nationals prize giving with proceeds going to the Dark Horse Foundation, a non-profit organisation that helps kids develop purpose through Chess.
A good selection of chess products will be available for purchase through the day including booksclockschess sets and cool stuff! We will not have EFTPOS facilities so cash is preferred or you can do a bank transfer.

If you have any further questions, please email I wish you all the very best for this event!
