Team Nationals Pathway

The Journey to New Zealand’s Premier School Team Championship

Team Nationals is Chess Power’s premier national school team competition. It brings together schools from across New Zealand to compete for national team honours in both Onsite and Online tournaments.

Schools qualify through official pathway events held throughout the year. These events reward performance, participation, and team development — providing multiple routes for schools to earn their place on the national stage.

Whether competing onsite or online, every pathway leads to Team Nationals.

Team Nationals – How to Qualify

Schools qualify through:

  • Checkmate Challenge
  • Regional Events (including out-of-zone Regional events)

Schools can earn additional qualification spots by qualifying at multiple events (including out-of-zone Regional events).

After Qualification

Once a school earns qualification spots through approved pathway events, they will receive official confirmation of their total number of qualification spots.

Qualification spots:

• Accumulate across multiple events
• Apply within the relevant division (Junior, Intermediate, Senior)
• Determine how many players a school may enter

Schools:

• May enter the Team Nationals – Onsite Tournament
• May enter the Team Nationals – Online Tournament
• Can enter both tournaments
• Must register a minimum of four (4) players per event

Final team lists must be submitted by the published registration deadline.
