    • NOTE: Some venues have maximum capacities. The sooner you enter, the better your chances are of not missing out.

    Entry Fees

    We offer special prices for the host school and the rookies division. For the junior, intermediate and senior divisions, pricing is based on the schools EQI band.

      If you are unsure which EQI band your school belongs to, please refer to this Ministry of Education spreadsheet. You can also refer to this EQI fact sheet for more information.

      We will invoice you after tournament completion based on the number of students that attend. Please do not bring payment on the day. All fees inclusive of GST.

      Divisions

      Rookies division - only open to junior players (years 1-6) that are completely new to chess and have never played in a chess tournament before. The rookies division is introductory, participation and priced lower to encourage early engagement in chess events. Players compete as individuals.
      Junior division - For players from Year 1 through to Year 6 (students must be between 5 to 11 years old).
      Intermediate division - For players from Year 7 - Year 8 (students must be between 11 to 13 years old)
      Senior division - For players from Year 9 – Year 13 (students must be between 13 to 18 years old)

      • The Rookies division is not eligible for qualification to Team Nationals.
      • The top individual in the Rookies division qualifies for the Champions Trophy.
      • Winning teams in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior divisions qualify for Team Nationals.
      • Winning individuals in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior divisions qualify for the Champions Trophy. 

      Format

      7 Round Swiss. 15 minutes per player. Refer to our Regionals FAQ - Format for more details.

      • Designed for new players and experienced alike.
      • All the rules are described before the tournament starts. Please make sure to read the Regionals FAQs.
      • Enter as many players as you wish (preferably a minimum of 4). The more that enter, the stronger your school team.
      • Each school must provide parents or teachers (minimum 1 per each 15 students) who are responsible for supervision of participants for the duration of the event. See the Terms & Conditions page for more information.
      • Schools may play in any one, or multiple, zones. You are not restricted by location, however if you are playing in an out of zone event, your entries are limited to 8 players in total.
      • See the Prizes page to get a better understanding of which teams & students qualify for the Chess Power Team Nationals and the Chess Power Champions Trophy.
