What makes you a good coach?
I am patient, encouraging, and able to explain concepts clearly at a level each student can understand. I enjoy helping students develop their skills while also creating a fun learning environment where they feel motivated to return to lessons of their own accord.
Key strengths
My key strengths include strategic thinking, pattern recognition, and problem-solving. I am also approachable and adaptable, which helps me respond to each student’s unique needs and learning journey.
Why do you love chess?
I love chess because it is both challenging and rewarding. Every game presents new opportunities to think creatively and make strategic decisions.
When and how did you first learn to play?
I first started playing chess when I was six years old. My parents encouraged me to attend chess lessons, and at first I was reluctant. However, with the help and encouragement of a coach who was fun, friendly, and approachable, I began to take a deeper interest in the game. This eventually led to chess becoming a big part of my life.
Why do you enjoy working with kids?
I enjoy working with kids because I can see their growth and excitement as they improve. Teaching chess allows me to encourage critical thinking and a love of learning in a fun and supportive environment.
Main chess achievements
My main chess achievements include placing second in the NZCF Interschools in 2021, achieving first place in Chess Power Interschools events, earning first-place results in Summit Rapid tournaments, and competing in the NZCF Interschool Team Championship Finals in Palmerston North.
How do you think chess helps kids?
Chess helps children develop concentration, patience, and problem-solving skills. It encourages logical thinking, decision-making, and perseverance, which are valuable both on and off the board.
