Overview
I have been enthusiastic about chess ever since my dad taught me how to play when I was around eight years old. I have been involved in chess clubs at my schools since primary school and have competed in several regional chess tournaments. I think chess is a great way to engage the mind and an even better way to build lifelong friendships.

What makes you a good coach?
I have always enjoyed sharing my knowledge with others. I also love the idea of helping more people get involved in such an amazing and strategic game.

Key strengths
I can think quickly and adapt to different situations. I also have strong communication skills, which help me teach students with a range of different personalities and learning styles.

Why do you love chess?
With chess, there is never a dull moment. Even from the beginning of the game, you are always thinking ahead and responding to what your opponent does. The strategic nature of chess, along with the community around it, is why I love the game.

When and how did you first learn to play?
When I was around eight years old, my dad introduced me to chess. He taught me how the pieces moved, and we would play a few games together two to three times a week. This helped me understand the game better and improve my skills.

Why do you enjoy working with kids?
I enjoy working with children because they bring a fresh perspective to everything they learn. Young minds often find creative ways to achieve their goals that I may not have considered otherwise.

Main chess achievements
During my school years, I participated in two chess tournaments. In 2016, I competed with my primary school team, and we placed third overall in the region for our age group. Later, while at high school, I took part in a Bay of Plenty regional tournament between high schools and helped my school place first overall.

How do you think chess helps kids?
I believe that teaching children chess helps develop problem-solving skills, not only in the game but also in everyday life. It also gives children the opportunity to find a supportive community while encouraging one another to improve.
