I believe a good coach helps students think—not just follow moves. I combine solid technical knowledge with patience and encouragement. I listen carefully to where each student is at, adapt to their learning style, and provide clear, supportive feedback so they can build confidence and enjoy their progress.
Clear communication: I explain ideas in simple steps with examples, so students understand the “why” as well as the “how.”
Patience & empathy: I recognise that everyone learns at their own pace, creating a safe space to ask questions, make mistakes, and grow.
Motivation & energy: I keep lessons engaging and fun, encouraging curiosity.
Organised & resourceful: I prepare thoroughly, use varied materials, and set stretch challenges that are ambitious yet manageable to build confidence.
Chess blends strategy, creativity, and logic. Each game is unique, with puzzles to solve and lessons to learn. It sharpens the mind, tests character, and rewards persistence—and there is always more to discover.
I was introduced to chess by my father around age 8. I played my first tournament for Gampola Zahira College in 2004, and since then I’ve continued to study games and tactics, learning from both wins and losses.
Kids have remarkable curiosity and honesty. Their joy in solving a puzzle, discovering a strategy, or simply outdoing their previous best is infectious. I enjoy guiding them, sparking confidence, and helping them realise what they can achieve—in chess and beyond.
