What do you think makes you a good coach?
I think my experience working with kids and my ability to adapt to different learning needs are important for being a good coach.
What are your key strengths?
My key strengths are my patience, attention to detail, and ability to maintain a positive attitude.
Why do you love chess?
I love chess because it’s a battle of wits — you win by out-thinking and out-playing your opponents. Every win validates your capabilities, and every loss shows your potential to grow.
When/how did you first learn to play?
My dad first taught my brother and me how to play chess when I was around 7 years old. We developed a strong sibling rivalry and played many matches against each other — he usually won. I practiced a lot with one goal in mind: beating him. I’ve now surpassed his skill level, but those matches were a big factor in my growth.
Why do you enjoy working with kids?
Kids are curious. I enjoy working with kids because I like feeding their curiosity and seeing them grow.
What are your main chess achievements?
-
Senior Boys Chess Champion (2025) — Mount Roskill Grammar School
-
4th place — Chess Power Senior Team Nationals
-
5–0 record — Schools Checkmate Challenge
How do you think chess helps kids?
Chess builds a problem-solving mindset and challenges children to think ahead. It teaches them to think before they act — a simple but very important life skill. Also, chess’s longer time formats train children to be patient.
